Major: Urban Studies; Hometown: Yonkers, New York; High School: Horace Mann School
From the Lions Mouth:
“We live on Broadway and 116th Street, in the heart of what is equivalent to a suburban college town. You see it everywhere you go, whether it's Sebastian, the friendly manager of an Italian restaurant up the street, or Khan, who runs my favorite of the many halal carts around campus. And to walk around a campus that has so many trees and lawns and people playing Frisbee--that's something special you don't see on many urban campuses. There's a pretty extraordinary set of balances going to school where we do.”
My Columbia Day:
  • 8:45 a.m.

Start off the day with Challenges of Sustainable Development, a class grounded in multiple subject areas and taught by Jeffrey Sachs, the head of the Earth Institute.

  • 1:10 p.m.

Go to Introduction to Urban Sociology, where I’ve been working on a set of essays about Inwood, a neighborhood in northern Manhattan. My essays are based on data, observations and interviews with local citizens.

  • 2:40 p.m.

Discuss everything from farmsteads to the design of 1930’s post offices in Making of the Modern American Landscape with Professor Elizabeth Blackmar, a funny, memorable, and captivating lecturer who is always willing to have long conversations with me during office hours.

  • 4:10 p.m.

Work on my musical abilities in Ear Training, which complements my background in piano. I teach two students on the weekends. It’s rewarding to rethink the way I learned the instrument as I teach them.

  • 6:00 p.m.

Take a break before dinner to work on my hobby, writing crossword puzzles. I’ve had two published so far in the New York Times.

  • 9:00 p.m.

Meet with my fellow editors at the Columbia Spectator, where I am the City News Editor. It’s been really exhilarating to work on a daily paper, and I’ve had the opportunity to sit down with everyone from President Bollinger to the chair of the local community board to talk about issues that affect our lives on and off campus.
