Marek S.

Major: Neuroscience and Behavior; Hometown: Slusovice, Czech Republic; High School: Open Gate Boarding School
From the Lions Mouth:
“As an international student, I must encourage other students from abroad to pursue their academic experience here at Columbia University. Situated in New York City, it is a great place to learn about American culture and also find other international peers who share your excitement about this eventful atmosphere.”
My Extracurricular Activities:
My Columbia Day:
  • 8:30 a.m.

Begin my day with Youth for Debate, an organization that teaches public speaking skills to New York City public school students.

  • 11:00 a.m.

Listen to Professor Nicholas Christie-Blick discuss sedimentary geology and his research in reviewing crusts to examine climate change, in Frontiers of Science.

  • 1:00 p.m.

Pick up a quick lunch and then head to Butler Library to study – it is so beautiful there and I always run into friends whenever I’m there!

  • 3:00 p.m.

Go to my cognitive neuroscience lab at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, where I am looking at the formation of habits underneath the mentorship of Professor Kathleen Taylor.

  • 10:00 p.m.

Head to the indoor courts at the Dodge Fitness Center for practice with the Tennis Club. As I used to play in tournaments in high school, it was important for me to continue my hobby at Columbia.
