Simon J.

Majors: Russian Language and Culture, Political Science; Hometown: Waldorf, Maryland; High School: Thomas Stone High School
From the Lions Mouth:
“Here at Columbia, I learned for the first time how to reach out and grab opportunities. Our university has a tremendous wealth of resources and ways to get ahead, but none of them are going to fall into your lap. I don’t think any other atmosphere could have better prepared me for the real world.”
My Columbia Day:
  • 9:00 a.m.

Attend Contemporary Civilization. Today we’re discussing Tocqueville’s Democracy in America.

  • 11:30 a.m.

Go to my internship at thebigword Language Services Firm, where I serve as an interpreter in Spanish and Russian. I’ve met a lot of professionals in the field, and while I initially thought I wanted to be an intrepreter, now I’m more interested in the diplomacy field.

  • 1 p.m.

Pick up a snack at the Doughnut Plant, one of my (many) favorite restaurants throughout the city. There are just so many options to choose from!

  • 2:40 p.m.

Discuss the role of nationalism in political conflict in my Nationalism seminar, offered by the Political Science department.

  • 4:10 p.m.

Attend my Gay Culture in Contemporary Spain class with Professor Javier Perez Zapatero. This class has shown me things I never knew about a country where I had studied in high school.

  • 8 p.m.

Meet with the Columbia Spectator Editorial Board – we write three weekly staff editorials on campus events and university happenings. These editorials allow us to connect with the administration and act as a source of information about University news.
