Columbia University Gardening’s purpose is to produce and maintain a productive, healthy garden throughout the year, and to teach students about growing and eating their own food, as well as providing a community of people who respect the environment and care about saving it. Its final purpose is to host, cohost, and promote events that teach students about gardening, food, and the earth. Many of our gardeners have some family member or ancestor who has farmed before: we provide students with the unique opportunity of reconnecting with their roots and re-learning vital skills that produce food for life, directly on Columbia’s campus. We also hope to provide more gardening space for growing in the future and more volunteer opportunities, as we collect more gardeners, so that all members can play a significant role in developing their own care, taste, and skill for working the earth.
